- L-shape: Divide into two rectangles, calculate each, add together
- Triangle (bay window): (Base × Height) ÷ 2
- Circle (round room): π × Radius² ÷ 144 (convert sq inches to sq ft)
- Trapezoid (angled wall): (Base1 + Base2) ÷ 2 × Height

- Measure the longest length and widest width of each room section in inches. Multiply length × width, divide by 144 to get square feet. For irregular rooms, divide into rectangles and triangles, measure each separately, and add them together. Always measure twice—a 2-inch error in a 20-foot wall is a 3.3 sq ft error by the time you buy materials.
- How much extra flooring do I need for waste?
- Add 10% for standard straight installation. Add 15-20% for diagonal patterns, herringbone, or rooms with many angles and obstructions. The waste factor accounts for cuts that can't be used, damaged pieces, and future repairs.
- Should I measure in feet or inches for flooring?
- Measure in inches for accuracy, then convert to square feet (divide square inches by 144). A measurement of 12'6" × 15'4" is easier to calculate as 150" × 184" = 27,600 sq inches ÷ 144 = 191.7 sq ft.
